Pet is a Haunting Psychological Horror

Have you ever had the urge to lock someone in a cage until they love you? No? Ok, just checking!

Pet revolves around a lonely man named Seth who works at a dog pound. One day while riding the bus, Seth sees his high school crush Holly writing in her journal. Seth has been trying to work up the nerve to talk to Holly for a while. He knows that she is an inspiring writer that works as a waitress at a local diner. With plenty of glee, Seth decides it's time to make his move! Watching Seth trying to talk to Holly is insanely painful, plus Holly simply does not remember him. Ouch. Completely shutting Seth down, Holly leaves the bus and moves on.

Seth decides to stalk Holly on social media, in particularly on Instagram in order to find out what she likes and dislikes. A couple of days pass and feeling better prepared, Seth shows up at Holly's job with the mission of asking her on a date to a concert of one of her favorite bands. Holly doesn't think Seth is sweet, instead she thinks he's a creeper and once again rejects him. Seth decides that he will make her his...by any means necessary! He comes up with this outrageous plan to kidnap Holly and hold her hostage in a cage like an animal until she loves him. Of course, things aren't that simple! Is it possible to train a human to love you? Will Seth get his happy ending with Holly? No spoilers here!

When it comes to Carles Torrens' Pet, it may seem like a film you've seen before, especially for those who love a good horror film that involves an obsessed, love-drooled fool. However, there's more to this film than you think! I always tend to do my review spoiler free simply because I feel that terrible things happen to people who spoil movies! Yet, when it comes to Pet it's something that you must watch on your own. When it comes to the character Seth, yes, he's creepy; but as the viewer you're sympathetic. Dominic Monaghan (Seth) does a great job at portraying the shy stalker who's completely captivated by Holly. The true surprise comes from Ksenia Solo, who plays the beautiful Holly. She completely rocks this layered role. I adore how she is able to remain vulnerable yet able to fight back in a way that's believable.

Also, Jennette McCurdy has a brief yet vital role that's completely different from any of her past Nickelodeon roles. High five to the writer of this film, Jeremy Slater, because it's far different from any of his previous films such as The Lazarus Effect (2015), Fantastic Four (2015) and TV series The Exorcist (2016). I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what he comes up with for Death Note (2017).

Overall, I highly recommend Pet. I recommend going in with an open mind. One of the major things I found interesting about Pet is the portrayal of obsession and how it can motivate someone to go completely bonkers. This film takes a seemingly normal man who loves his job at the animal shelter and transforms him into someone unrecognizable. Pet did a great job interpreting the chilling thought of someone suppressing urges and losing battles. Pet is a psychological horror that dares to be not only different but also memorable.
