FILM -- Day of the Dead (1985)

Day of the Dead is the third in George A. Romero’s classic dead series.

What's the dead series? Night of the Living Dead (1968), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005),  Diary of the Dead (2007) and Survival of the Dead (2009).

The film follows a group of survivors, living underground in a Floridian Army base from zombies who have taken over the world. The survivors include scientists, a mad scientist, foul mouth military men, a wise Caribbean man who seems to know everything, and of course, the random alcoholic guy. The group, with no communication to any other humans, has been looking around nearby cities to find survivors. Meanwhile, the scientists desperately look for a cure to heal the infected. Within the first scenes, it’s clear that the group of survivors have no hope and plenty of tension.

The tension between the group arises even more when the commanding officer Captain Rhodes discovers that the lead, mad scientist Dr. Logan is no longer trying to discover a cure. Instead, Dr. Logan is doing experiments to see if zombies can be domesticated. From there, we meet one of the most famous zombies in all zombie history, Bub. Captain Rhodes and his loyal, cackling, sex-obsessed soldiers are completely outraged with the idea of domesticating zombies or having zombies as pets. They quickly decide to take matters in their own hands by killing and destroying anyone in their path. I’m sure you guess what happens next! Everything takes a turn for the worst, zombies overtake their underground base!

I believe that the diversity of the group made this film entertaining. There’s plenty of blood, guts and lasagna gore in this one, which I absolutely loved. The only major flaw for me was the ending, I was somewhat disappointed. Although 20 years ago, this film pretty much flopped; today, rather if you hate it or love it, it’s considered a cult classic!

Overall, I recommend Day of the Dead to all, especially the zombie enthusiast!

I even visited the filming location, check it out here!
