FILM -- Vampire Academy

Written by Zena, REAL QUEEN OF HORROR

It has been a CRAZY week at RealQueenofHorror.com so my apologies!

This may be a bit confusing to some but hopefully you can follow! For starters this is NOT a horror film, at least to me, though it has horror tendencies! Moving on, in the world of Vampire Academy, there are different types of vampires; mortal vampires known as “Moroi” who maintain peace with humanity, “Dhampirs” who are half-human, half-vampire guardians, and finally, evil vampires called “Strigoi”. The film follows seventeen year old Dhampir Rose Hathaway and her Moroi best friend Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir who is a vampire princess. The two are attending St. Vladamir’s Academy, a school where Moroi learn how to control one of their four elements of magic while Dhampirs trained in combat.

Rose and Lissa have been on the run for one year before they were captured and brought back to St Vladmir’s. Now that the two are back, they will have to deal with hate, jealousy and a mysterious person out to kill Lissa. Although the film is called “Vampire Academy,” the vampires who attend there never call it that. If you haven’t known already, this film is based off of Richelle Mead’s young adult supernatural novel of the same name.

The two main characters are a bit generic. Rose, the strong one, has so much sass yet she’s so compassionate; whereas, Lissa is super nice and very proper yet has a naughty streak. Visually, there really isn’t anything special about the film. Unfortunately the CGI and the marketing of the film looks cheap. The film posters were done in an amateur way that literally looked like a teenager designed it in Photoshop. I get that they wanted the film to appeal to teenagers, but in my opinion, they just cheapened it.

Overall, “Vampire Academy” was entertaining and I actually read the book so I wasn’t disappointed. If you haven’t read the book, the film isn’t too complicated to follow. Also, I heard many people comparing this film to Harry Potter and Twilight, which I don’t understand why. Yes, they have vampires and other creatures like those two films; however, Harry Potter and Twilight are DIFFERENT films and cannot and should not be compared to Vampire Academy.
