HORROR OPERA -- The Devil's Carnival

The Devil’s Carnival was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Terrance Zdunich. It was released officially sometime in 2012. Before I jump into the review of this horror opera, I call it--people do need to understand it a horror musical, yes--a HORROR musical and it's also a film experiment.

Basically, this horror-filled opera is based on Aesop's Fables of three damned souls; a suicidal Father grieving for his dead son, a thief who is killed by the police and a teen who is murdered by her boyfriend. In these tales, they're all implied that they died but they find themselves awakening in Hell at a carnival. On arrival, they meet a ticket keeper and tell the three people there are rules and there are consequences of breaking them.

What made me take notice to the film was when I found out the director financed the film himself. Not only that, but he took the films/show on the road showing it at small movie houses or outdoors on a portable screen. And due to the fan reaction being extremely positive, the director promised to continue his creation.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I do think that everyone should experience this film. I absolutely LOVE the way it's filmed; it's a visual feast for us all to devour. There's a mixture of dark colors but it fits perfectly. It doesn't have REAL horror moments or a lot of brutal killing. But it has the real horror atmosphere and that's something I really admired. It also maintains that dark humor.

I'm really excited to see where the director takes this film. I hope he'll continue to visually awe us and keep up with the awesome ideas. I feel this will be a FANTASTICAL experience for people to enjoy. I wish I would be invited to be a part of this awesomeFEST.

ANYHOW! Because I really enjoyed the cast, the story line, the music...

I give this film, 4 out of 5 queen skulls!

FILM -- Detention

Detention is an awesome movie directed by Joseph Kahn and was released sometime in 2011. Although the movie has a plot we ALL heard of before watching it, it is indeed diverse! I noticed with other people, they either REALLY liked it or HATED it. And I can totally understand why, but in my case, I adored it!

When the opening credits came on, I knew I'd loooove it! Anyhow! There's a killer on the loose in Grizzly Lake targeting teens at the local high school. BUT! It's not like just any ol' killer! This killer is Cinderhella! Cinderhella is a character in a popular horror movie franchise within the movie. Confused much? Well, don't be! There is the typical nerdy yet captivating main character, Riley, that is in love with her friend that her former best friend is stealing affections from. One day, Riley is messing around with committing suicide--since to her, this seems like the only way out. But she is interrupted by the fake Cinderhella whose trying to butcher her. Somehow, Riley manages to escape and tries to tell the police BUT of course, the cops don't believe her story. So the killer remains on the loose and under the radar.

There is plenty of teen drama that results to us jumping to it almost being prom night! YAY! Around that time within the movie, some awesome things are revealed! But I will NOT spoil it for you! THE LESS YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS FILM THE BETTER!

Just know that the director and writer crafted up something magnificent that a lot of average people may not like. Yes, average! This film has four films within ONE. There's horror, comedy, romance, blood, time travel, monsters, teen angst! It's PURE genius in my eyes.

There really is no clean cut classification for this film. At first I thought the film seemed liked your typical, campy slasher but I was so wrong! I was really unsure of what the director, Mr. Kahn, was aiming for, but he really did succeed beyond anyones expectations!

And again, the LESS you know the better. That is why I tried my best to not give away too much! Leave it a mystery, trust me...I KNOW THIS!

This film is ridiculous, clever and pure GENIUS! Needless to say, I absolutely LOVE it.

I give it 4 out of 5 queen skulls!

01/14/2013 -- Weekend Box Office!

IT'S MONDAY! We're fresh out of the weekend! I'm one of those people who enjoy keeping up with the box office so I can enjoy the results! It's always VERY interesting when it's a weekend of new releases.

Especially this particular weekend! I heard from many people their disliking for remakes as well as for the Texas Chainsaw 3D. YET, people can't seem to get enough of it. Although it made number 9 this week, it probably will be even lower next week. Needless to say, it doesn't matter. It earned over 5 million within 2 weeks.

A Haunted House did a whole lot better than many people expected! It earned $18.8 million! For those who live under a tree or...a rock, it's a horror spoof from Marlon Wayans. Their production budget was $2.5 million.

It dawned on me; no wonder there are remakes being made left and right because people WILL go see them. Sadly, original horror movies get no love easily.

Here are the top ten results for this weekend:

1. Zero Dark Thirty – $24,000,000
2. A Haunted House – $18,817,000
3. Gangster Squad – $16,710,000
4. Django Unchained – $11,065,000
5. Les Miserables – $10,127,000
6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $9,080,000
7. Lincoln – $6,314,000
8. Parental Guidance – $6,100,000
9. Texas Chainsaw 3D – $5,150,000
10. Silver Linings Playbook – $5,000,000
