SHORT FILM REVIEW -- Dead Pretty

Director Sarah Peace contacted me on Vimeo to review her short film Dead Pretty. I watched the trailer and was completely intrigued. So she sent me the full film to check out! The film was released some time in October 2011 and was directed, written and produced by the genius Sarah Peace.

The film stars the beautiful Katrina Nare. They don't say her name in the film..in fact, no one speaks in the film! But the actress Katrina plays Mila, the lead role. Mila is having a lovely slumber when all of sudden she awakes to find she is being held captive by a way too familiar entity! *GASP!!* It's her hair. Yes, her hair! All of her hair (which is in braids) slithers its way off her head and down her body. Her hair ties her up in the middle of the night, in the dark bedroom that she's in and ties her down where she is completely helpless and can't move. The more she tries to escape, the more aggressive it becomes!

From first seeing the trailer, I had so many ideas on where I thought this film would lead. But all of my assumptions were wrong! What I completely loved about the film was its uniqueness. I've never seen a film like this before. I thought the story line was extremely creative with the whole Medusa idea and the way it was all filmed. Stop-motion, animation and live action scenes were all used throughout the film.

I did think the make-up could have been done a tad differently. Katrina didn't really appear bald when her hair slithered away from her. However, this detail didn't distract me from the actual story line of the film.

Something I didn't know about the film and  recently found out was that it was exploring themes of masculine dominance and women's psychological relationship with hair. I honestly did not catch on to that the first time around. I had to watch it a couple of times.

You can check out the trailer for Dead Pretty below!

Overall, I do think it was a unique short film that I wanted more from! I thought it could have been more as far as it goes with the story line. I get that it was a short film, but I guess I desired more explanation about Mila and her love for her hair.

I recommend this movie, especially if you're a lover of creativity as I am. I give it 3 1/2 out of 5 queen skulls. RQOH has spoken!

MACHETE KILLS -- Lady Gaga

So, the film Machete Kills started filming last month! Lady Gaga is the lastest addition to the cast. Her character name is La Chameleon.

I'm pretty sure that she'll just have a cameo in the film because it was confirmed that she already wrapped up her time on the set.

The movie stars Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Zoe Saldana, Edward James Olmos (rumored), Jessica Alba, Charlie Sheen, Alexa Vega, William Sadler, Electra Avellan and Elise Avellan.

The synopsis is as follows: The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way throughout Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.

Anyone looking forward to this?

FILM REVIEW -- The Shadow of Death

I was sent an email from director Gav Chuckie Steel to review his horror comedy, the Shadow of Death! Of course, I was completely honored and after watching this film, I wanted to make sure that I put a lot of effort into this review, especially since Gav and friends put a lot of effort in to his film!

Anyhow, the storyline is about some friends who are on a quest to find weed. Unfortunately for them, there's a psycho killer in the woods!

Because I adore independent films and I can definitely see the love for horror within this film, I give it a 3 out 5 queen skulls!

TOP 5 Reasons Why You SHOULD Watch Horror!

It's no big secret, I LOVE horror movies! Unfortunately, I know many people who claim that they don't watch horrors or don't like them YET they watch True Blood or The Walking Dead. No, those two aren't movies but they're in the horror GENRE. And with that being said, it's such a sad world we live in where people do not know how to define themselves, but also, don't know what to like anymore because it may not be in. Bleh. I could go on...but I won't!

With this post I wanted to list the TOP 5 reasons why you SHOULD watch horror movies. I truly believe that you non-horror watchers are missing out! So, not only as a citizen of America but as the Real Queen of Horror, I need to do my rightful duty and indulge you all into some horror!

5. Simply for thrills!

You can attain this feeling by simply watching a movie! Too good to be true isn't it? Apparently, people seem to forget! If you watch a horror movie and you get scared, creeped out, turn your face away at certain parts or jump, then it's done it's job! How can you not love the rush? If you go to amusement parks, how can you not watch a horror? You aren't fooling anybody.

You went on that roller coaster ride for a couple of screams and thrills with no real life harm or danger--well, horrors are the same! These types of thrills pose no real threat and because of that, it translates in to being laughed at and enjoyed!

4. Entertainment.

Believe it or not, horrors are very entertaining. For example, someone getting their head ripped off while the blood continuously spurts out like a broken sink is very entertaining.

Seriously, with horrors, the joy of it is that there are no limits. I guess in our society that's not seen as the norm.

3. Teaches you morals & common sense!

People may think that in a society where there are shows like "16 & Pregnant"; or reality shows where you eat a pig's raw, infected  left nipple to win 30 grand; or hour long segments of boys and girls losing their virginity before they hit 14 years old that we are in an open, welcoming society--well wrong. Apparently, common sense isn't too common anymore.

An example, one of the TOP RULES in horror, is NOT to have sex. If you do, you die. Of course, people say that it's the "man" and his way of being in control. Perhaps if you're a teen and you're hot in your crotches as you read this text--just remember that if you have sex, you could possibly get stalked by a mysterious man who wears a trench coat even if it's 99 degrees outside. Keep that in mind when your boyfriend of 2 weeks, Douglas, is SEXTing you and you talk about it to your friends Mattie & Wilbert and you are all in agreement that it's "TIME".

Really though. There's no reason to go out swimming late at night by yourself when there just so happens to be a psycho killer on the loose. If you saw a horror where there was a killer running around slashing throats and cutting people's ankle bones completely, GUARANTEE, the next time you're in the woods alone--about to go swimming...you won't.

2. Loyal to it's genre!

When watching a comedy as an example, I'll see that the genre will sometimes drift off and it's like I'm watching a drama. However! Something I can honestly say when watching a majority of horrors is that I know what genre I'm watching! It's a constant reminder even throughout the building up process!

That's hard to come by these days: a movie that is TRUE to it's genre. I can name way too many movies I watched in the past and didn't know what kind of movie it was until it came on TV or even Netflix. Horror is more than loyal to it's genre! There's no forgetting what you're watching!

1. Because.

Yes, "Because", is the number one reason why you should watch horror movies! Im not going to try to convince people to do something especially when it's their personal preference! However, if you say you aren't a fan, I just hope that you're open enough to give it a shot! I believe it's important to do something out of the ordinary!

I personally love horror movies and will always love them. I enjoy being scared and even enjoy the dreams that come afterwards. I enjoy experiencing something so phenomenal--like the story and something horrific--the blood, gore, guts...etc, you get it! It all brings a positive feeling to me. In basic terms, some people love watching dramatic, sad movies that make them cry but yet it brings positive feelings.

If you aren't watching horror movies, I truly have no idea what you're doing with your life. But that's another topic! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

The Queen of Horror has spoken...kinda!

Upcoming Horrors for July 2012!

Though we're already 5 days into it, it's July! So in celebration, let's talk about all the delightful horrors that are coming out this month, whether it's straight to DVD or theaters. As always, if you've already checked any of the movies out, please let me know; or if you plan on checking any out...let me know anyway! Or! If I'm missing any, let me know!

Red Lights - RELEASE DATE: July 13th, 2012
This film is directed by Rodrigo Cortes (Buried). It's about paranormal researchers who are forced to reexamine their own beliefs. So, as far I know it's a psychological thriller.

The Monitor - RELEASE DATE: July 24th, 2012
Anna and her eight-year-old son Anders are under the witness protection program after having a difficult relationship with Anders' father. So, the two move into a large apartment complex. Since the two have been through so much, Anna is very overprotective of Anders and puts a monitor in his room to keep track of him.

Soon, strange noises from other apartments appear on the monitor, and Anna overhears what might be the murder of a child! *DUM DUM DUM!* While all that is happening, Anders makes a mysterious new friend and his friend starts visiting him at weird hours with some secrets of his own.

The Hunt - RELEASE DATE: July 24th, 2012
This film is about an undercover reporter commissioned to write a story about a series of gruesome murders. His investigation leads him to a secret society of wealthy businessmen who hunt humans for money. Soon, the investigation is caught in a spiral of violence where the reporter is forced to participate in the game until he discovers that he has become the hunted.

Sounds kinda familiar!

Rites of Spring - RELEASE DATE: July 27th, 2012
A group of kidnappers abduct the daughter of a wealthy socialite and hide out in an abandoned school. But soon the feelings of guilt overtake the kidnappers, dividing the group and putting their entire plan in jeopardy.

Big surprise! Anyway, so the evening continues to spiral out of control when their hideout becomes a hunting ground for a mysterious creature that requires springtime ritualistic sacrifices.

Sounds kinda familiar! Really, it sounds like Jeepers Creepers with that whole creature & all.

Killer Joe - RELEASE DATE: July 27th, 2012
So this film is based off of a play. It's a black comedy but some people consider it a horror. The director is William Friedkin, who directed The Exorcist. Anyhow, the film is about a 22-year-old man who finds himself in debt to a drug lord. He hires a hit man to kill his mother. This film is suppose to be like a modern-day, twisted fairy tale. Ahem. I guess we'll have to see about that.

Sadly, those are the only horrors coming out this month! No worries, horror will see better days, especially since I've been filming a movie of my own. Whoo hoo!

As always, Happy Horror!
