FILM -- Mother's Day

This is the remake of the 1980 version that was released by Troma. This 2011 version was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Scott Milam. The release date is unknown but I just saw it this week, so it was probably released June 2011. Anyway, the film is about three brothers who try to run from the law by heading back home. Unfortunately once they get to their home, they discover that their mother lost the house in a foreclosure. Their Mother is a powerful woman who helps her sons escape and also teaches the new home owners and their guest discipline over time.

This movie, to me, was so intense--though I read up on some other reviews and people didn't think it was. Hm...I'm completely baffled as to why they felt that way. It was horror but there was action and so much violence and gore as well! The movie explodes after a couple and their guest get invaded. That's when it all completely shifts into a film with a lot surprises, surprises that I won't spoil for you! Although it's a remake, the director and writer did a great job keeping the original core ideas and the dementedness on the family values.

I love how the film has that whole view on what would you do to survive as a hostage and how the Mother gives discipline, punishment & pleasure. Of course in movies like this, there are many power struggles among other surprised but it was nonstop entertaining. Also, the film has a great storyline, in my opinion--a story line with a lot of layers to it.

One thing, I did dislike was how there is that character that is weak in the beginning but finds strength...blah, blah, blah--same ol' same. I overlooked that character. Anyhow, great movie to check out! I say, this is the kinda movie you can watch alone, on a date, with groups--it doesn't matter!

  2. I didn't know that the original was a Troma movie. That doesn't bode well for it. I haven't seen either of these films though but I know the original is on Netflix so I might give it a go later. I'll probably switch if off after 5 minutes and wait for this new version. I'm hoping that it's going to be as sick and twisted as "Mum & Dad" but we shall see. ;)

  3. The mother character looks so tame, but I'm guessing she's not.

The kind of movie you could watch on a date? Hmm...I don't know about that!

  5. Thanks for the review :). I actually didn't know this version came out!

I've seen the original and let me tell you it was one of the few Troma films I could not stand. The mother and her sons were all so disgusting and terrible I could barely sit and watch it.

I'm curious if the remake will still make me feel that way or if it will seem toned down at all. The original certainly pulled no punches.

  6. @Shel I hope you guys like it!

@Dr. Blood, I was surprised it was Troma as well. I haven't seen Mum & Dad yet it's on my watch list but it did look very twisted.

@Justine Yeah, she really isn't! I was fooled. x_x! Well, maybe that's just me & my boyfriend who have movie date nights with like this one. Lol. If it helps, if you're scared you get to cuddle. That's a plus!

@Ghostwound it's definitely worth checking out!

@Marcus I felt the same way about the original. I only watched it once & that was enough for me. This one is a bit watered down because I believe it's more psychological but it does have those parts that are just hmm...I can't sit through this.

  7. I generally avoid most remakes but there is always the odd one that intrigues me. Mother's Day is one such exception. Your review has inspired me to put Mother's Day at the top of my queue!
